Lolita's Personality

Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists hoped that Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to sea.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her to be a family member, on a plan to eventually transport her to the open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could stay for the remainder of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean and not a concrete tank.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who connect with their families until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is being released into the wild. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. Lolita's Diet
